Brian Thornton

Winthrop named Mark Prosser and Brian Thornton assistant men’s basketball coaches. Prosser was Brevard’s head coach this past season and has been an assistant at Bucknell and Wofford. Thornton was an assistant at Furman last year and spent two seasons as Xavier’s director of basketball operations previously.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Chatham appointed Scott Koskoski as its new director of athletics. Koskoski spent last year at Denver as senior associate athletics director … Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hired Scott Lazenby as its new director of athletics. Lazenby was named the Islanders’ interim director of athletics since September 2011 after serving as the senior associate athletics director for administration and compliance.


Men’s basketball – Colorado State named Larry Eustachy head men’s basketball coach. Eustachy had been Southern Mississippi’s head coach since 2004 … Johnny Jones is the new head men’s basketball coach at LSU. Jones was North Texas’ head coach the last 11 seasons … Northern Arizona tabbed Jack Murphy as its head men’s basketball coach. Murphy comes from Memphis, where he was an assistant since 2009 … Tennessee State elevated Travis Williams from assistant to head men’s basketball coach. Williams has been with the program for three seasons.

Men’s basketball assistants – Tulsa hired Brett Ballard and Steve Woodberry as assistant men’s basketball coaches while naming Justin Bauman director of basketball operations.

Women’s basketball – California Baptist selected Jarrod Olson as its new head women’s basketball coach. Olson spent the last six seasons as Florida Southern’s head coach. Florida Southern elevated six-year assistant Holly Borchers to fill the position … Hamilton interim head women’s basketball coach Kate DeSorrento will remain the head coach after a national search … Mark Kellogg is Northwest Missouri State’s new head women’s basketball coach. Kellogg was Fort Lewis’ head coach the last seven seasons … Siena named Ali Jacques head women’s basketball coach. Jacques was on the staff at Northwestern the past four years … Western Michigan chose Shane Clipfell to lead its women’s basketball program as head coach. Clipfell spent the last three years as associate head coach at Michigan State.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Longtime DePauw head women’s swimming and diving coach Mary Bretscher announced her retirement. Bretscher held the position since 1974.


Detroit hired Drew Westrick as assistant director of athletic facilities, named Melissa Kopriva the assistant director of marketing and promotions, hired Aaron Short as assistant director of strength and conditioning and promoted Joel Walrath from sports information assistant to assistant sports information director.

NCAA committee vacancies

The NCAA is soliciting nominations for a July 2012 vacancy on the Division I Awards, Benefits, Expenses and Financial Aid Cabinet. The appointee must be a financial aid officer from a private institution. The appointee may be from any subdivision. For this vacancy, please use these nomination forms rather than the online system. The deadline for submitting nomination forms is May 11, 2012.
